| Reserva Integral Monte Caimito is located in the
Esmeraldas province situated in the northern coast of
Ecuador, South America. The access is by a dirt road approximately
30 kilometers of the highway, or by seagoing canoe. Nearby
Monte Caimito there are many communities (Estero del Plátano,
Quingue, Caimito, Tongorachi) that lodge different ethnic
groups such as afro-ecuadorians, mulattos and mestizos,
working mainly as farmers and fishermen. The family income
of the people in the area is very low and there is a high
poverty rate. The education and health services are insufficient;
therefore, the illiteracy rate is high and there are many
environmental and health problems. |

The forest
of the surroundings is one of the last remains of tropical
rainforest of the Ecuadorian Choco, located by the sea.
The Choco is one of the most biodiverse ecoregions of
the planet. In only one season 210 birds species have
been counted in the area. In Reserva Integral Monte Caimito there is also a high
diversity of other animal groups, and exuberant vegetation
with many endangered timber-yielding species. Between
the months of June to September the coast of this area
is visited by humpback whales, that breed in the waters
of northwestern Ecuador. There is an association in formation
whose main goal is the creation of a larger reserve to
protect this region. |
