Reserva Integral Monte Caimito's main projects are the following:
|
|
 |
| Reserva Integral Monte Caimito protects an important
area of primary and regeneration forest. Nevertheless
to ensure the conservation of the area's biodiversity
and guarantee the water supply for the communities of
the region, it is necessary to expand the reserve and
reforest vast areas. The volunteers will participate in
this project in the construction and maintenance of a
native species nursery; reforestation in the reserve;
construction, maintenance and signposting of trails; construction
and maintenance of an interpretation center; and investigation
projects. All the activities will be done under guidance
and supervision. |

One of
the most important activities of the area is agriculture,
being cocoa and fruit the main products. The soil of the
area is clayish and very sensible to erosion due to rough
topography. The actual farming techniques (as monoculture
and excessive use of agrochemicals) are inadequate and
lead to a low productivity and loss of the soil fertility,
therefore the farming boundary is expanding leaving sterile
and eroded land where only pastures grow. For these reasons,
one of the most urgent projects in the area is the creation
of an experimental farm to be used as a model and training
center for the farmers of the area in sustainable organic
agricultural practices. The volunteers will participate
in different activities: nursery; establishment and control
of experimental cultures, and vegetable gardens.

| Many
of the schools of the area don't have the adequate infrastructure,
and many are single classroom. The teachers don't receive
an adequate training and lack didactic material to develop
their job. The Reserva Integral Monte Caimito is initiating an alternative education
program, adequate to the local reality that includes programs
such as environmental education, health, nutrition and
art. The volunteers will participate in workshops, courses
and classes in areas according to their training and experience.
